Understanding and Supporting Pica and Polydipsia: Teachers and School Staff

Pica and polydipsia are more common than many people realise, and clear guidance on how to support children and young adults safely in school is needed.

Underpinned by research and grounded in over eight years of direct experience working with children and young people who present with pica and polydipsia behaviours in educational settings, this course provides a clear, practical introduction to understanding, identifying and meeting these needs in both mainstream and specialist settings.

It helps school staff recognise early signs, understand the underlying need, identify the function of the behaviour, and meet that need safely. Through simple safeguarding strategies, practical interventions, and everyday examples drawn from case studies, the course builds confident, needs‑led responses.

Short optional activities and spaced Information Checkers are built into the course, offering gentle pauses and chances to check understanding and reflect as you move through the content. Included in this course is an optional 1:1 half‑hour collab‑sultation, offering supportive joint thinking focused on an individual child’s or young person’s needs and their school or educational context.

This course is progressing through UK CPD accreditation, and certificates can be issued once the process is complete.

More pica and polydipsia courses are currently being finalised, including one designed specifically for school leaders and one designed specifically for parents, carers and families.
